You’ll get a glimpse of presidential history with a visit to the boyhood home of Woodrow Wilson, where he experienced the hardships of the Civil War and the hope of reconstruction. The Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History offers unique historical and fine art exhibitions honoring the achievements of one of the state’s most influential African-American educators. Springfield Baptist Church is the oldest independently formed black Baptist church still holding services in its original location, and is where Morehouse College was founded in 1897. You can spend a relaxing afternoon walking along Riverwalk Augusta, a two-tiered park on the banks of the historic Savannah River. Riverwalk offers unique art and cultural exhibits, the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame’s Botanical Gardens, and the National Science Center’s interactive Fort Discovery Museum. Along the way, you’ll also find dozens of restaurants and unique shops. The adjacent Augusta Canal offers additional gardens, picnic areas, kayaking and rides on the Petersburg Boats, where you can traverse the canal the way Augustans did more than 100 years ago. A trip to the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park, a 1,100-acre bird and wildlife preserve just minutes from downtown, delivers an exciting introduction to a unique part of the southern natural landscape. And after a short drive to J. Strom Thurmond Dam and Lake, you’ll be enjoying more than 1,200 miles of shoreline and the largest manmade lake east of the Mississippi River. If golf is more your style, the annual Masters® Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club is the sport’s premier competition and a coveted spectator event. You can hone your game at one of the city’s nine major courses, then visit the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame or one of the many local shops that cater to golf fans. Augusta, the second oldest city in Georgia, was founded in 1736, just three years after Savannah. Antebellum charm and old-fashioned hospitality still characterize this classic Southern town. Many people know of Augusta because of the Masters Golf Championship, held each year at the azalea-laden Augusta National Golf Course. Although a quiet town, Augusta has plenty of attractions. Visitors should stroll along the winding Riverwalk — a 6-block, scenic pathway down the Savannah River levee. As the central tourist hub, the Riverwalk area hosts numerous concerts and outdoor events year-round. Golf enthusiasts will want to check out the 17-acre Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, and families will enjoy a trip to the National Science Center’s Fort Discovery. Augusta is also home to the historic Springfield Baptist Church. Founded in 1787, it’s the oldest independent African-American congregation in the country. |
